On 21st-23rd August 2017, the Director of the Institute of World Economy and Politics at the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Elbasy), Mr Yerzhan Saltybaev, conducted a working visit to London, during which he held meetings with a number of key British think tanks and research institutes, such as the Royal Institute of International Relations (Chatham House); the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI); the International Institute for Strategic Studies; and the Duke of Edinburgh Foundation.
In addition, Mr Saltybayev also met with Lady Olga Maitland, Director of the Defense and Security Forum; Ms Jennifer McNaughtan, Deputy Director of the Department for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; and Mr Alan Parfitt, Head of the FCO Eastern Research Group.
As head of one of the largest non-governmental research institutes of Kazakhstan, Mr Yerzhan Saltybayev discussed the Institute of World Economy and Politics’ potential co-operation with British counterparts in a wide range of issues, including the implementation of joint research projects; academic exchange programs; and the participation of British experts in developing analytical recommendations for solutions to regional issues.
A separate issue that was also on the visit’s agenda, was the discussion of a particular platform for expert dialogue known as the ‘Astana Club’. British analysts praised the ‘Astana Club’, noting that its annual meetings allow representatives of various countries to openly exchange views on neutral grounds, enabling them to come to mutually agreeable solutions.
